Sustainability Management EMASplus

The Sustainability Management EMASplus is based on the proven EMAS-System (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) and expands the Environmental Management by the social and ecological perspective towards an integrated and holistic management system. The actions of an organisation are oriented to systematically evaluate and optimise its social, environmental, and economic impacts. The standardised sustainability report assures transparent information available for the public.

EMASplus is suitable for all branches and organisations

With the premium system EMASplus, comprising high requirements, you are positioned as a socially responsible organisation. EMASplus integrates ethically responsible behavior and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) into your core processes and your organisation’s culture systematically and continuously.

How did EMASplus start?

As part of a EU financed project, kate and partners in the social economy, developed the Sustainability Management System EMASplus. It originates from social service organisations and was a recommendation to the European Commission for the continuing development of EMAS towards a Sustainability Management. An official recognition by the EU exists for EMAS as the foundation of the system, however, not for the additional sustainability aspects of EMASplus.

Integrated Sustainability Certification

The system is comprised as a guideline of the nature of private law. It enables the integrated certification as a Sustainability Management System. As such it is oriented along with the ISO 26000. Accredited environmental verifiers with extended qualifications conduct the EMASplus certification. EMASplus is an open system available for all types of organisations, which are EMAS registered.

Main system elements of EMASplus

  • a sustainability oriented organisational policy
  • frequent sustainability assessments to collect and evaluate the contributions and impacts of the organisation regarding sustainability
  • an improvement programme derived from the organisational policy and sustainability assessments
  • an integrated management system incorporating sustainability aspects in the organisational structure and processes as well as in training and communication
  • a standardised and certified sustainability report to assure transparent information for the public
  • frequent controlling through internal and external audits

  • Working conditions and environmental protection in suppliers’ firms
  • Fulfilment of social/ethical responsibility (contributing to local value-creation, anti-corruption measures, ethical investments, support for civic activities, conforming to human rights, etc.)

Effort and Certification

The implementation process takes 8 to 12 months – depending on the capacity of the team and project lead for each organisation. Depending on the size of the organisation, a time budget of half a day to one day per week is necessary during the implementation phase.


An organisation’s EMASplus certification also contains the integral elements:

  • EMAS Validation
  • DIN EN ISO 14001:2010 Certification

EMASplus is compatible to the requirements of the ISO 26000.

EMASplus Guideline

The EMASplus Guideline based on the EMAS regulations and formulates the additional requirements for the EMASplus sustainability system.
