"Changing the atmosphere in tourism"
International Meeting: "Changing the atmosphere in tourism - Contributions to Responsibility and Sustainability in Tourism"
25 and 26 September 2008 in Lima/Peru
"Tourism Responding to the challenges of climate change" is the motto of this year's World Tourism Day which will be commemorated by an event held by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) on 27 September 2008 in the Peruvian capital Lima. In the run-up to this official event, non-governmental organizations from Latin America, Asia and Europe will meet in Lima on 25 and 26 September to discuss strategies of social and ecological sustainability in tourism. A corresponding declaration will then be addressed to the World Tourism Organization's official event.
The meeting held by non-governmental organizations is themed " Changing the atmosphere in tourism – Contributions to Responsibility and Sustainability in Tourism" and addresses the following topics:
1. Let's get tourism out of the growth trap - Angela Giraldo, deputy director of the Center für Ecology & Development (KATE) and Heinz Fuchs, head of TOURISM WATCH, the EED's worldwide special desk for tourism
2. Tourism policy, liberalization, concessions - Rodrigo Ruiz Rubio, president of the Association for the Defense and Development of Kuelap (Asociación para la Defensa y Desarrollo de Kuelap, ADDK, Peru)
3. Tourism and climate change - Sabine Minninger, advisor on climate change and tourism
4. Climate friendly concepts of tourism and mobility in newly industrialized countries - TT Sreekumar, Ecumenical Coalition on Tourism (ECOT) / National University Singapore
A concluding podium will be attended by all the experts from the above-mentioned workshops as well as by public figures from politics, economy and media. The UNWTO's secretary general will also be invited to participate, in addition to representatives from Latin American countries and the EU.

Besides all the main events in Peru commemorating World Tourism Day there will be additional activities in several other countries. In Thailand, the Ecumenical Coalition on Tourism (ECOT) and the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) will jointly hold a meeting on 25 September 2008 at Bangkok to discuss counter measures of the tourism industry against climate change as well as strategies of adjustment to it.
